Olive oil can be used for just about anything—skin care, eating healthy, eating Mediterranean, fixing a squeaky door hinge, to name a few—so when I found out there was an app dedicated completely to learning about and selecting olive oils I sought it out immediately. The Olive Oil is an educational app released by Emilio Vacca for an iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad and it costs $0.99.
The base level of olive oil knowledge that I had prior to installing The Olive Oil was comprised of a few vague semi-factual details: It is generally made in arid climates, it is the healthiest type of oil to use when cooking, and it is best to use extra virgin pressed olive oil.
Well this app introduces an abundance of auxiliary information with a total of 12 categories to delve into. The category titles are, Oil in History, Types of Olive Oil, Olive Oil and Food, Read the Label, Olive Varieties, Olive Oil Production, Most Expensive, and so on. Oil in History has to be my favorite category because it does a stellar job of condensing 8,000 years of olive oil history into 9 subcategories.
Apparently, people started using olive oil to moisturize their skin and used to burn it for the aroma it would give off. In the Most Expensive category we learn that you can actually spend $80 on one 88ml bottle of olive oil, which is mind blowing, but after the app explains the reasoning for this, it makes you want to save up for one of those bottles of liquid gold. Olive Oil Production does not seem like it would be an interesting group of facts, but it is fascinating to find out the origin of the foods we consume on an everyday basis. If after using this app your appetite for olive oil knowledge has been thoroughly wetted, you can go to the Olive Oil Books category to find a list of recommended readings.
The Olive Oil is a first-rate app that I recommend to everyone. There are no glitches (other than a few typos), the app is packed with facts, and you can purchase it for next to nothing.
