Sea Battle Classic review

Do you get overwhelmed by nostalgia when you think of childhood games like Battleship? Well, rest easy, for there is now Alena Kurulenko’s Sea Battle Classic Lite game app for you to enjoy on the iPhone. It’s just like the boardgame, only with an appealing handdrawn theme and exciting battle sound effects. You can play against the game or against another person, but you need to buy the full version to enjoy the latter option.

Hit Setup Ships to randomly position your ship blocks. You can also move them around by dragging them, and flip them at a right angle by double tapping. Hitting Start will start the game; the bottom screen is your field, in which you choose which squares of your enemy’s to attack: a blacked out square means you missed, while a red X means you hit their ship. If you score a hit, you get another chance to fire; downing an entire enemy ship will black out all the squares around it. You can see the enemy’s attempt on your ships on the upper left-hand square; check the upper right-hand square to see how many of the enemy’s ships you have left to sink.

The instructions on the Instructions menu are rather difficult to understand, so thank goodness the game really isn’t. For such a simplistic game, it can get quite addicting, especially if you lose to the computer a number of times in a row. It may get frustrating, however, if you posses large fingers–the squares are somewhat small and don’t change sizes. The vibrating effects and sound effects of battle make this game app even more exciting, of which the paper sound effects are a cute embellishment. In continuing with the paper/handdrawn theme, the graphics of the game itself aren’t really all that special (it consists of the squares of a graph paper and red X’s, basically), but the drawings that pop up when you win or lose are amazing, as well as the highly appropriate Taps that plays under the right circumstances. This iPhone app just goes to show that this game really is a classic to be enjoyed by many generations, so pick it up and enjoy it or check out the lite version for free.
