Initially released by caweb.de under the name ‘Biplane Duel’, Airplane Duel is a neat little Bluetooth-enabled biplane shooter. The name change is presumably to avoid any copyright infringement from the original Biplanes game that this one is pretty much directly modeled from. Biplanes was a really addictinly popular game in the 80s and was one of three arcade games packaged in Triple Action for Mattel’s Intellivision. If you’ve think you might have never heard of it, chances are you’ve probably seen it or variations of it all over the Internet.
The game is really straightforward, simply your plane against your opponent’s and the goal is to shoot him (or her) down. The first to get to 15 wins. You control your plane with the up & down directional controls on the left and you fire with the “fire” button on the right. After lift-off, your plane will easily glide and loop around. Aside from avoiding your opponent’s shots, your challenge is to keep your plane in the air. Flying too steep of an angle will cause your plane to stall and crash.
Airplane Duel is played between two iPhones via Bluetooth, but there is also a Practice mode that you can play against a computer. You can set the computer’s difficulty at 3 levels, Easy, Medium and Hard. You can also choose to be the red plane or the green plane and from 3 basic backgrounds but other than that, the mechanics of Airplane Duel is pretty much the same Biplanes game you may or may not have played back in the day. Airplane Duel is currently in the AppStore for $0.99.
