As if Twitter didn’t up the ante on celebrity stalking enough, the release of Poptweets marks a new standard in unrequited familiarity. Self-billed as a “curiously addictive celebrity trivia game,” Poptweets quizzes you on just how well you know your celebrities by displaying a tweet belonging to one of three celebrities which you will have to correctly attribute to. If you discover someone whose tweets appeal to you but aren’t already following, you can easily add them to your Twitter feed from in-game.
With thirteen celebrity niches ranging from typical celebrities to internet famous, you’ll be sure to find one that suits your fancy. For trying to cater to everyone’s inner stalker with their categorical varieties and their Suggest a User feature, Poptweets earns some plus points, although they get some minus points for their Science category, which is playable but its button is greyed-out (what are ya trying to say, huh?!). [Update: Derek from Get Set Games has kindly informed me that being greyed-out indicates there are more categories underneath it. Swipe to see more!]
Anyway, the game is pretty straightforward. Like creepers of the feline sort, you have nine lives. Incorrectly identifying a tweet or letting the time run out will cause you to lose a life but consecutively identifying the right celebrity will not only add more ticks to your life but also increase your score multiplier. With Twitter and OpenFeint functionality, you can show everyone that Perez Hilton ain’t got nothin’ on you.
The layout and design of the app looks sharp, polished and cleanly organized. Coupled with its mellow but animated background music makes for an experience that is pleasing on both the eyes and ears.
The trivia app is free and comes with ads which I found to be unobtrusive enough to ignore but for the hardcore PopTweeter, you can upgrade to the ad-free full version which will disable the ads and also promises to give you access to unspecified special features and content in future updates. And even though I’d like to believe my stalkerazzi tendencies fall under selectively minimal, I found myself strangely proud of correct answers and surprisingly irritated with wrong ones.
Poptweets is a begrudgingly entertaining trivia app and now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go wish @ladygaga a happy birthday.
