Zepi review

Where there are simple games involved, there are “match-three” games–you can’t miss ’em. In this case, it is Viacheslav Iushchenko’s game app, Zepi, the originator of a long string of spin-offs for nearly every occasion imaginable.

The rules of Zepi are quite simple: tap bubbles of the same color consecutively to connect and get rid of them. Do so as quickly as possible, for all the other colors are still coming in from all sides, and once the screen fills, it’s game over. The bubbles light up when you tap them, so you’d know which ones are selected; tap a bubble again to de-select it, or wait a moment to let it do so by itself. The longer the chain you make, the more points you’ll garner…however, the longer you play, the faster the bubbles will come. The bubbles fly in from all sides and congregate towards the circle in the middle (think magnets)–press and hold the middle if you need to pause. There are three skins to choose from: Classic, Bugz, and Cold. Each skin features different bubbles icon, color schemes, and sound effects.

Zepi doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, but it takes an interesting spin on it. While the concept may be old, the graphics are fresh and gorgeous. The bubbles are shiny and realistically rendered, as is their affinity for falling into the middle as if magnetized, and check out the neat acclerometer action when you flip the iPhone landscape/portrait. There is a slight challenge in the increasing speeds and the way that the bubbles shift to make room, but not enough to actually be frustrating. Zepi makes a good game to launch when you have a couple of extra minutes, but save your hour-long lunch break from something a bit more involved. It’s almost worth the $0.99 just to watch this game be played.
