The Incident

What is The Incident? What is the greatest mystery of the world? What happens when you walk down the street and a car falls from the sky!? I DON’T KNOW!!! You can try to solve the mystery too on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad for $1.99 (8/12/10). The Incident was brought about by Big Bucket Software.

This game has a completely nostalgic 8-bit pixel art style and awesome chiptune music. The icon even looks like a cover for an old NES game with the hand-painted look.

The Incident

So what is this crazy awesome Incident I speak of!? Well, basically, you play as a business suited man who can run around in the direction you tilt your iPhone in, and jump when you tap the screen. The game starts gameplay simply by showing a brief cutscene. From there, you’ll see this mysterious white bar on the top of the screen blink wildly. When you walk forward, BOOM a car drops from the sky and lands on the street. In your extremely sudden and abrupt tutorial over, you learn in an instant that, “Hey. For my safety, I better avoid going under the blinking white bars.” … Or in my case “OMG, RUN AWAY!!!”

The Incident

This is a brilliant way to start off the game. From out of nowhere, literally everything including the kitchen sink will fall and stack up. Pillars, doors, drawers, dog houses, umbrellas, and liberty bells will fall from the sky and try to kill you. It’s utterly jaw dropping after you realize that the item list is ridiculous. Almost like they took an entire IKEA store and launched all the stuff at you. Your goal as the player is to climb the pile, avoiding falling objects, collecting coins hanging on balloons, and standing under the giant beam of light that will drop a diamond down.

Each time you die, the game will hilariously show you what you died by and how high up you were when you were killed. Seriously… they kept track… and they WILL mess with you by reminding you of it. Then they archive it for your sake. The game does not take itself seriously and it worked perfectly.

I love this game. Maybe it’s because of the art style. Maybe it’s because of the very easy controls. Maybe it’s because the music isn’t distracting or annoying. Maybe it’s because the unique items are all so random, they make perfect sense. This is a game that starts you off with a bang and keeps you hunting for the truth behind The Incident. Power-ups, power-downs, and a business suited guy jumping out of the way of a falling fish tank. What does that equal?
