Because that’s what I did and I worked great in the beginning but then after a few levels everyone started beating me because they made more money so that the could buy more.

What buying the defensive buildings does is up the defense on a SINGLE unit, so if I have three buildings all that goes to one unit(you don’t even need a unit). So it is a good idea to buy defensive units, but it costs more upfront but then you don’t need to pay any income.
