xGPS

The xGPS project is an experimental task aimed at developing an open software and hardware GPS solution for iPhone and iPod touch. Unlike other apps sold in the App Store like G-Map from Xroad, xGPS is currently only available via Cydia or Installer.app

xGPS features voice navigation with directions while music is playing and turn by turn instructions using Google Maps directions. In Night mode xGPS will automatically turn on between 8pm and 7am or turns on by a timer which you can set manually.

xGPS is currently free. To grab the latest beta version of xGPS you need to have a jailbroken iPhone and have Cydia installed. Then you can add the Xwaves repository by using the following URL: http://cydia.xwaves.net/

xGPS features Turn By Turn Voice Navigation on iPhone. Here are a few video demos beta versions of xGPS on the iPhone

Use iPhone mods and hacks at your own risk! Installing 3rd Party iPhone apps requires you to jailbreak the iPhone before installing the native software and apps. You can use Cydia to do this. Browse the full list of all iPhone and iPod touch native 3rd party apps filed under the software category.

  1. I really like that XGPS for IPhone 3G But IPhone apps can’t find or match for XGPS in IPhone. The apps do not have a XGPS download. is it risk ?

  2. i just got navigation app. G-map EAST in app store.
G-map is better. cause it provides tbt and others.
It is perfect navigation app for now. It gives me TBT direction and that’s pretty much what I was looking for. Much easier to use while driving than Google map. I’m happy with app. one thing missing is voice guidance.

  3. My iphone is using jailbroken program. Can i upgrade My Iphone 3G to version 2.2.1? If can, hows?

  4. thanx

  5. Exellent browser

  6. Just started using xGPS Drive software on an ipod touch with a Dual GPS cradle.

I found the maps to be very limited once I left my immediate vicinity, within a few miles of home.

Yesterday on my 15 mile drive home from work, several times I found myself driving in a gray checkerboard, but zooming out to about 2 miles per inch, the map returned.

Today I was driving the same route as yesterday and for half my trip home from work I had no map at all. This was in a suburban area. Just for fun, I tried to set navigation back to work, like I did this morning, but it said I had no internet connection, which leads me to believe the number and quality of maps on the ipod at any one time are very limited.

I don’t know if there’s a solution to make the software of any real use with an ipod. It may need to be used with an iphone to get continuous map updates.

The mapping part of the navigation software worked okay on my way to work this morning, but I started before it had a GPS fix. It gave me the choice to start navigation from my last known GPS position, which I assumed to be home, but it started 5 miles out of my way in a nearby town. It kept telling me I was off course and 14.5 miles from my destination even after my path merged on the map with the route from where I wasn’t. When I got to work, the map showed my location correctly at my destination, but the text directions still said I was off course and wanted me to return to the nearby town and start over.

I hope to be able to find some use for it, as it seems okay except for a few major deficiencies with the maps.
