Kiosko.net is an iPhone app that shows you the front page of newspapers and some mags from around the world. The app has a very large collection of worldwide newspapers from USA, Canada, Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Africa. Although you don’t have to pay for the papers each time, you are limited to the front page and can’t read the entire paper. If you’re looking to buy and read full newspapers on your iPhone/iPad, the PressReader app is still the way to go.
Using a beautiful folded display format Kiosko shows you the papers on a wall. Tap any newspaper to view its full larger front-page image. Double tap to zoom in on any image. The text of the images are not always crisp and clear enough to read even when you have zoomed in all the way. You can make out headlines easily and the images are good quality. After you tap any newspaper, Kiosko downloads today’s newspaper cover which takes a few seconds of waiting.
The thumbnails of the folded papers has a ribbon that tells you when the paper was last updated. A side nav lets you jump around other papers in the active category while browsing. If you find an article interesting enough and want to read the whole thing, tap the web browser icon and you will be taken to Safari where you can see the newspaper’s website, mostly optimized for the iPhone. Set your favorite set of papers as favorites and you can view them all quickly from the Favorites tab. Use the search feature to find newspapers by keyword or browse them alphabetically. The app only looks for the titles of the papers, not their content. An iPad version of Kiosko would be great to have.
Couple of major issues we had: The app crashed once in a while trying to view the images. Sometimes the images get downloaded half way way. Some of the bigger papers you’ll have access to are: The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal. The app works in both landscape and portrait modes. While not a replacement for your daily newspaper, Kiosko is a really a nice shortcut of keeping a tab on the headlines from around the world in one place. Pricey and if they work out the small kinks, it is nice to open this app up in the morning and see all your favorite news headlines in one place. Perhaps worth picking up if you plan to use the app on a daily as your virtual newsstand to catch up the latest headlines. It would be nice if the app gave users the option to buy the full version of the paper.
