Stacks review

Do you thirst for knowledge? Stacks is a slick looking flashcards app for the iPhone with thousands of built in cards in various topics that can help anyone learn new subjects such as match, spanish, trivia, quotes, jokes and more. Learn while you have fun in topics such as “Chick Flicks”, “Beer”, “US Citizenship Exam” and even strange things like “Morse Code Alphabet”, “Twinkies” and “SMS Shortcuts”. The app has a shiny wood background with lamp lit topics you can flick through. The main topics are slightly hidden away and might not be visible at first look. To get to them tap on the topic name on the bottom of the screen which slides open what is called the Stack Library. From here you can browse through all the main topics and the many sub-topics for each one. For example tap on Geography to see the many topics such as capitals of each continent, us capitals, national parks, and state nicknames. Some other cool subjects are world wonders, jokes, terms and phrases, learn Spanish, and study facts. You can also check out the featured stacks, and recently added stacks to get started quickly.

Once you find a good stack just tap it to get started. Stacks are shown with black background and white text, similar to a digital blackboard. Read the question and flick up/down to see the back of the card with the answer. Flick left or right to see the next/previous card. Almost all the stacks are free, as noted by a tag on the card stack, but there are some that you have to buy, using in-app purchase. Stacks also has a link where you can send in a suggestion for new stacks to be added to the app.

It would be great if stacks allowed users to create their own stacks on the iPhone to use for study sessions on the fly. Also the price at $10 might keep out some of the more casual app buyers. Overall, Stacks is a wonderfully designed app with a ton of topics to go through, so you or your kids, will always have something new to learn.
