Who doesn’t love a good dungeon crawl? Especially when the game plays like Chibi-Diablo: same as classic Diablo, only with way more CUTE! Sorry, it’s the gigantic pointy hat; it just gets to me.
A classic third-person dungeon crawler, you play as a hapless wizard’s apprentice who is tasked with infiltrating the mysterious and foreboding Solomon’s Keep for your final exam. This means lots of dungeon crawling goodness, complete with clammy stone walls, hordes of evil skeletons, and your trusty magic missile spell to get you through it all.
This is classic gaming goodness right here, all smartened up with chic graphics. This is what you’d get if you took Diablo, shrunk it down for maximum cuteness and decked it out in its Sunday best. Play time is brief, depending on how good you are at dual-stick controls, but the game is still tons of fun.
Solomon’s Keep isn’t quite perfect, with lots of little glitches here and there, and the on-screen controls, naturally, aren’t as responsive as everyone would like, but it’s a remarkably fleshed out game with interesting character design, robust mazes, and a decent upgrade system. Happily, none of the glitches really created any major problems, but hopefully the developer will be able to address all of them in the future.
This isn’t a heavy duty RPG, so you can’t come into it expecting a whole lot, but those of you who are looking for a more casual dungeon crawl experience will like Solomon’s Keep. There aren’t a lot of scenery changes, but there’s plenty of exploring, and it’s the kind of game that you can pick up or put down at will, perfect for those of you just looking for a mini-dungeon fix while waiting in line or something.
As I mentioned before, you can beat the game fairly quickly, but it’s still a decent challenge, and there’s definitely some replay incentive, as you can develop your character’s abilities in different ways. Perhaps not the best dungeon crawler in the world, but Solomon’s Keep is still highly recommended as one of the better (and currently cheaper!) dungeon crawls in the app store.
