Extreme_Formula review

Extreme_Formula is a gaming app that has the player in the driver’s seat of a racecar on a high-speed crash course ride into oblivion. The game was released by GOGN Entertainment, costs $3.99, and is compatible with an iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad but requires iOS 4.1 or later.

This is a great game for people who have trouble tearing themselves away from their X-Box or Wii long enough to go to work, grocery shopping, or out with friends. You get the viewpoint of the driver as you take your seat and begin the ride. In Options, you can test out the amount of control you have over the vehicle by playing with the sensitivity of the accelerometer and wheel. You can also add vibrations while in Options.

To steer your car you use the left and right arrows located at the bottom left side of the screen. Managing the car’s movement is an arduous task to undertake. You have no control over the speed of the vehicle and the steering capabilities take some getting used to. When you are in Quick Race mode, the cars you race with are always shown on the screen in order from first to last place to give you an idea of where you stand in the race.

While on the racetrack, electric pods hover overhead and if you drive under one of them your car is stopped in order to recharge. You get to choose which of 10 cars you want to race from a choice of four classes, F 110, BM-10, TK1, and x110e and you can choose Booster or Extreme mode for the race. There are 12 different racecourses to choose from and you can pick how many laps you want to take from 1-3. In the MatchPlay mode you can race other users via Game Center.

If I have one complaint about Extreme_Formula it is that the controls are not achieved through tilting. I think it would feel more like a race if I were gripping my iPhone as if it were a steering wheel. I otherwise had a great time racing.
