PlacePop, with their self-titled iPhone app, is another social networking tool at your fingertips. It uses your iPhone’s GPS to locate businesses, restaurants, bars, parks, etc. around you, which you can then Check-In at (you can also search for the location). Checking in at the same place multiple times earns you status: 3 Check-In’s earns you Bronze status, 10 gets you Silver status, 25 is Gold, and 50 is Platinum (we’re looking at you, coffee addicts)…collect them all! While you’re there, you can snap a photo or write a note about about the place and upload it so others can marvel (or stalk you). If you want to be the stalker friend, you can get your friends on PlacePop by Inviting and then Following them; that way, you can also get recommendations on where to eat or shop through them.
The PlacePop app is a simple app, and fairly intuitive to use. Reading others’ notes is sort of like reading a Yelp review, which is usually helpful; it’d be even better if we could have a way to expand the text, instead of getting the first few lines. And as with any location-based app, not everything you visit is going to be in the directory, but PlacePop has plenty of areas covered and is pretty darn encompassing. However, unless the developers plan to update frequently with new places, perhaps a way to submit new locations to the database would be efficient. Using this iPhone app is a great way to explore an area before you actually go out and do it, or to keep up with with friends; it’s also a pretty helpful tool for keeping track of all the places you visit and might want to return to. Give it a try, because it’s a pretty good deal at the price of free.
