3banana Notes

Ours is a fast-paced society, with information exchanged and incidents happening at the speed of light. Sometimes we have to take a moment to jot down our thoughts or ideas or memories, lest they disappear into the ether, never to be seen again. Thankfully, you can prevent that from happening with Snaptic’s ambiguously named app, 3banana Notes.

It’s the same concept as carrying around a notepad and pencil and whipping them out whenever inspiration strikes, or if you want to record a memory for posterity’s sake. Only instead of paper and pen, you’re using an iPhone or an iPod Touch. Just tap the + button to start typing. 3banana employs the same hashtag labeling system that Twitter does: whatever word you type after the # sign can be used to keep your notes organized. For instance, if you open up an entry and it’s tagged with a #music hashtag, you can tap on it and all the notes tagged with #music will come up.

3banana also allows some HTML formatting, so your notes can have that much more rich-text emphasis. You can bold, italicize, and underline text, as well as embed hyperlinks and photos (although 3banana detects URLs and automatically turns them into hyperlinks). Each note can also hold one photo (tap the camera button), so choose carefully; don’t worry, you can remove or replace it later, as well as edit the note. You can type as many entries as you want–unlimited storage ensures that you don’t have to worry about counting characters (I’m looking at you, Twitter).

Although you can use the app offline, you can also add and edit notes while on the snaptic website, as long as you have an account. One of the best aspects of 3banana is the ability to sync and back-up your notes with snaptic.com whenever you want–just think, no more lost notes! With an app so functional and convenient, it’s rather appalling that no landscape option has been implemented. For people who hate typing on the tiny portrait-oriented keyboard (like me), this is a huge disadvantage. Also, a little more control over customization would be a nice touch: although the default is quite easy on the eyes, I’d like a say in how my notes are presented. Otherwise, 3banana is uncomplicated, perfect for everyday use, and practically guarantees your precious data’s prosterity (flex some of those syncing muscles). Best of all, 3banana comes to you at the best market price: free.
