TomTom US and Canada review

TomTom US and Canada is an iPhone app that will perform GPS navigation and give you turn by turn directions on the new iPhone 3G S.

All you need is the TomTom app, including the latest maps and the TomTom car kit, that offers enhanced GPS reception, loud and clear voice instructions, hands-free calling while at the same time charging your iPhone. And the TomTom will also play your music from the iPod app in your car stereo.

– The windshield mount/dock is optional. TomTom for iPhone app will run without it.
– Mount has a built-in, standard one-eighth inch audio-out jack. Can run a cable to car aux audio.
– It includes a microphone and speaker.
– It enables hands-free calling via its mic and speaker.
– It charges the iPhone.

Update: TomTom has added real-time traffic flow updates to its iPhone app, which it calls “HD Traffic”. You can also now buy the voice of Homer Simpson with a $5.99 in-app purchase to use for navigation in the TomTom app.

Update: Today there has been breaking news about TomTom admitting to sending your routes and speed information to the police. This information is collected if you use the Live sat-navs in TomTom. It is possible to turn feature off, though it defeats the purpose of the service. If you have the HD Traffic service on your iPhone, this is the same thing as sat-navs. GPS privacy have also been in the news with Apple recording and tracking your iPhone location information.
