If you have a first generation iPhone or iPod touch and want to install the latest version of iOS (4.2.1 right now) to get new features like folders, background processes and multitasking, the folks at whited00r have created a solution. Installing whited00r emulates the features of the new iOS on your older iPhone or iPod touch.

These firmwares are built by the people at whited00r and give you some of the new features created recently by Apple in your older hardware. Apple has officially dropped support for iPhone 2G and iPod Touch 1G devices, leaving those owners stuck at iOS 3.1.3 firmware. Additionally iPhone 3G users have reported very slow performance after upgrading to 4.2.1 which is mainly due to the shortage of RAM and processing power in older devices.

With whited00r you not only get new iOS features, you also get it “lite” which basically means a stripped down version allowing your older device to run faster. Take a look at the comparison demo to see the differences in performance between whited00r and iOS running side by side.

To install whited00r, you basically download the matching firmware files from the whited00r website, and install them on your device via iTunes. Just open iTunes and connect your device. Then While holding shift (Alt on Mac) click the restore button. Choose the file you downloaed from the whited00r site and follow the instructions. You can go with either Full or Lite versions of whited00r.
